Ten Years In: A Critical Juncture for 2030
1:51
The world stands at a defining moment in its pursuit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With just five years remaining, the latest assessment reveals a sobering truth: progress is far too slow and, in many areas, reversing. Despite meaningful achievements over the past decade—ranging from expanded social protection to improvements in health, education and digital connectivity—the pace and scale of change fall short of what is needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Only 35 per cent of SDG targets are on track or making moderate headway, while nearly half are moving too slowly, and 18 per cent have regressed to levels worse than those recorded in 2015. This reality underscores the profound impact of global crises, including conflicts, climate shocks, rising inequalities and growing debt burdens, all of which continue to hinder development gains. Yet the report is equally clear that the SDGs remain achievable—if the world acts with urgency. It calls for bold, coordinated action across six essential transitions capable of unlocking widespread progress: food systems, energy, digital connectivity, education, jobs and social protection, and climate and biodiversity. Each of these areas represents an opportunity to drive systemic transformation and build resilience against future shocks. Achieving the SDGs will require renewed political commitment, significant investment, and strengthened partnerships across governments, businesses and civil society. As the window for action narrows, this moment demands collective resolve. Delivering on the SDGs is still within reach, but only if decisive steps are taken now.
